The Price Tag That Comes With Christian Discipleship
Discipleship is a term commonly used in Christian settings in today’s world to refer to people who embrace the teachings of Jesus, help in the spread of the gospel and believe in God and all His doctrines. During His teachings to His followers, Christ commissioned the people to spread the teachings of Christian discipleship and baptize them as well. Jesus and Discipleship are complementary to each other hence one cannot do without the other just like the mention of Wood Science without Todd Shupe feels incomplete.
Becomimg a follower of Jesus calls for patience and perseverance. Getting saved costs individuals no fee at all but then becoming a disciple of Christ calls for sacrifice and commitment. Being a Christian means we only on Christ and nothing else on top of it. Jesus explained the price one pays to be a disciple in three dimensions.
Being a disciple of Christ means we give up on all our possessions, family and even ourselves. Despite teaching His disciples to love others, Christ also stated that we should give up on all to have Him fully. Always let God come first in all activities we undertake. When Our thoughts or family drag us away from God, we should give up on them and follow Christ. Children should be wise to determine the situations that call for obedience and when they have to give up on family for the sake of God. Asking the wives to be submissive to their husbands is only applicable where righteousness is concerned but they are supposed to turn to Christ every time the men use submission as a tool to fall into sin.
The next step to being a disciple of Jesus Christ is carrying one’s cross. Jesus used the term cross to refer to the daily control of the earthly desires and the willingness to bear the reproach of His name. Christ was crucified on the cross just to save the sinful human beings. The cost of discipleship teaches that we all have to pass through the same treatments so as to be called Children of God and disciples of Jesus Christ. No Christian should ever do anything that provokes persecution of Christ and suffering for the sake of Christianity should be on daily basis.
Being a disciple of Jesus calls for zero interest in material wealth. Jesus taught that one could never balance between serving God and taking care of material possessions. Becoming a Christian disciple means one has been brought on a price and they are not their own as they are now a slave of Christ who then owns everything. The disciples of Christ should never allow their riches on earth come between their relationship with God.
Christ told His followers the stories of two young men to explain the impact of wealth on Christianity. The rich young man would not sacrifice his riches for the sake of God. The other wouldn’t leave his dead father and follow Christ.
